Natural organic decay takes place unseen and in total darkness. The constant sweeping and cleaning action of the water as it circulates, keeps the surface of the gravel clean and the water invisibly clear. The rapid flow of oxygenated water greatly accelerated the decomposition process and insures adequate nitrogen levels in the gravel for beautiful plant growth. Fish stay healthier because they cannot feed on their waste matter nor can they disturb the decay bed. Periodically, the bed can be "back flushed" clean by simply connecting a siphon hose to the "center tube" and draining out a few gallons of water.
